Morningsong, the reason for the road

Morning is God's way of gently shaking me awake with a smile and saying, "Get up, knothead. You're not finished yet."

I love mornings, by God. Always have. And by morning I mean a half hour or so before dawn. It's the grand reawakening of my little corner of the world. Sunrise, birds, the dew; the works.

Sunrise outside my home in Southern California is always spectacular. Sunrise everywhere is spectacular, amid mountains, deserts and seascapes. Even urban alleys and poor, blighted neighborhoods are washed by a hopeful light at dawn regardless of weather and transitory human circumstance.

A new day. A thing of beauty and grace.

I'll turn 60 in a few months. Though I've missed a few along the way I estimate I have had the thrill of experiencing nearly 20-thousand sunrises so far. I don't mean to be greedy but I'd sure like to see a few thousand more.

And, isn't there something extra special about a sunrise on the open road, away from home?

Whether holed up in a cheap motel, staying with family or, best of all, waking up in my RV in some exciting new place, daybreak feels like the Christmas mornings of my childhood: promises of wonder in yet unopened gifts.

I'll take mornings wherever I find them.

I'm not finished yet.

  1. good for you for not being 'finished' yet..me either!..we still have plans so we can only hope that we will wake up to a few more sunrises!

  2. Just experienced a sunrise out here in the Texas hill country (Kerrville), and it was drop-dead gorgeous! If not freezing....
My wife and I feel so lucky to be enjoying the full-time RV lifestyle, and the dawn is always a special time. Our little 5-lb. Yorkie "Buddy" assures that we don't miss many. Enjoy!

  3. Any morning I wake up with out dirt in my face is a great morning, The ones down here in San Felipe are awesome as the sun rises over the Sea of Cortes. We are truly blessed to be able to have this type of lifestyle.

  4. Right on Dave - great story and visual writing.
Let me address your 2 comments. First, turning 60 will be one of the best days of your life. That is because you are turning 60 and didn't die in your 50's (think that over for minute).
Second, a half an hour or so before dawn is indeed the "reawakening" of a 24 hour life cycle and the best part of each day. Full moon to the west and Venus to the east (my wife is from there) as the sun starts to rise and bring life to the day. Yet, so many people miss that part of life.

  5. thank you, sometimes wish i could just dump life here and take off on the open road, but that is not realistic---- spouse and me of 57 years now watch each other's backs as we age out into whatever comes down the road--sold our RV couple of years ago, were not using it anymore. really miss RVing.

  6. I don't know which gives me greater pause...the loss of mornings due to my demise or the loss of our RV lifestyle due to our aging. For me, it is for now, a toss up!
